Physical & Creative Expression
In her plan for study and work, Dr. Montessori makes clear the importance of self-expression in the developmental stage of adolescence. In fact, it is the first consideration in her educational syllabus. The inclusion of self-expression is a direct response to the adolescent’s “tendency toward creative work and a need for the strengthening of self-confidence." She wisely observed that “opening up ways of expression” would “help the difficult development of the personality.”
This development of the personality is the core of the adolescent’s internal work.
Through personal expression, the adolescent may freely ‘try-out’ various aspects of their developing personalities safely behind the creative license of self-expression in a safe and accepting community. It's important to offer a wide and vast array of physical and creative opportunities.
Possibilities for creative work are incorporated throughout the curriculum. Personal Expressions classes are offered every week throughout the academic year. Students have choice between various physical and creative expressions.
Throughout a year, our students might explore a vast array of activities, including (but not limited to):
Yoga
Trail running
Court sports
Field sports
Physical comedy
Stage combat
Horseback Riding
Poetry
Painting
Mask-making
Printmaking
Culinary arts
Photography & filmmaking
Graphic design
Coding

Creative projects are also frequently integrated into Science Occupations and Humanities projects so that students have avenues through which to express their ideas and feelings about what they are learning.
Opportunities for the constructive power of self-expression are offered almost daily to the adolescent community at Creo!
